Obituary

Aaron J. Neil, 90 yrs old, beloved father of Karyn Neil, passed away on the 13th of July, 2023 in Farmington, Maine. He was born to Pauline and Norman Neil on 17th of August 1932 and earned a masters degree from Farmington Teacher's College where he met his wife to be, Betty Mae Abbot. He went on to earn multiple masters degrees with a focus on learning disabilities while attending Boston University, University of Arizona and the University of Boulder, CO. Aaron had a lifetime passion for classical music, the theater, arts, and the written word. As an avid reader he acquired a vast library with a special interest in the history of the Holocaust, the study of world religions and he delighted in the author Robert Tristram Coffin. Many years were enjoyed going to the Portland Symphony, summer evenings at the Ogunquit Playhouse, listening to John Denver, James Taylor, watching PBS Masterpiece and various Musicals and Comedies. Aaron shared his love of the outdoors with his daughter, Karyn. As a toddler learning how to walk, Aaron was already teaching her how to ski and skate. They spent a lifetime hiking, cycling, skiing, swimming and snowshoeing together in Acadia, the Rocky Mountains, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and walking/swimming the beaches of New England and the Gulf Coast. One of his favorite memories was solo hiking the Austrian Alps. Aaron earned a gold medal in the Senior Olympics in swimming in Green Valley, AZ. Genealogy was important to him and he and Betty traveled to Canada and Ireland to research his family ties. Aaron had a high standard of values and believed in participating in the political process and often called his representatives or the Whitehouse to voice his opinion on matters of compassion and respect for humanity. In the 1990s, Aaron applied as a Novitiate in Arizona, and after 12 months of study, participated in the investiture ceremony as a Novice Benedictine Oblate and embraced the Benedictine way of living. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. May he now feel free and peaceful. He is survived by his devoted daughter Karyn Neil (Michael Sauber) of Silver City, NM, sisters Shirley Lorette, Louise Lake, Sondra Davis (Craig), numerous nieces and nephews and Yorkie Roshi. He is predeceased by his wife Betty Mae Neil (maiden name Abbot), sister Marjorie Neil, sister-in-law Shirley Grover (maiden name Abbot), his Yorkie, Gidget and Silky terrier, Riley. Special thanks to niece, Joan Hafner, for her tremendous assistance during this most difficult time, and Chris Bracy from The Downtown Press Cafe for all of the many delivered meals and friendship to Aaron. If you wish to honor Aaron, please consider donating to the Maine Democratic Party, or Mental Health Facility.
