New Sharon - Anita Eileen Butterfield Allen went home to join her husband and other loved ones who passed before her on the evening of May 11, 2026. Anita was surrounded by her loving family.
Born Anita Eileen Butterfield on July 22, 1937, to Dana and Iva (Clements) Butterfield in a family home on Chesterville Hill, Chesterville, ME, she was a beautiful and shy girl who was the oldest of four children.
In her early years, she loved all the normal activities most children of that era did– sledding, ice skating, playing with cousins, picking fresh apples, strawberries and blueberries nearby, and reading. She became interested in music and learned to play the tuba and the accordion.
In April of 1955, she married Clyde Allen. They were married for 63 years until he passed away in August of 2018.
Coming from humble beginnings, the couple worked hard to provide a good life for their family. Anita cleaned dormitories at Farmington State Teachers College (UMF), worked at George's Hot Dog Stand, tended vending machines for Food-O-Mat, worked at the auctions of F.W. Berner and then Clyde and Rodney, and ended her work life with SAD #9 as a cook in some of their kitchens, finishing at Cape Cod Hill School as head cook. She loved the interactions with the younger children and the staff. Reluctantly, she retired in 2018 at the age of 81.
Over the years, the Allen family was involved in the world of horses on their small farm in New Sharon. They could often be seen riding as a family in various parades and trail rides. Not a dedicated rider herself, she always supported the rest of the family in the many horse shows and other events they attended in the county.
Anita loved to bake, and she loved to feed people. No one would ever go hungry if she was around! She had a soft heart for anyone in need and would give support to many family and friends over the years.
A new adventure began for Anita and Clyde when they took over the F.W. Berner auction house in Industry and later built their own auction house in New Sharon. Anita ran the office and kitchen, and was the main clerk for Clyde and then Rodney for many years
Anita is survived by her daughter, Wendy Harvey (Keith), her son, Rodney (Lisa), six grandchildren – Jana Harriman, Michael Browning; Derek Allen, Megan Carrion, and Kristopher and Cody Allen. She also leaves behind five great-grandchildren: Jayden Harriman, Zavier and Zayden Paz, and Kallie and Lyla Allen; her brother Michael Butterfield (Carol), sister-in-law, Barbara Butterfield, special niece, Theresa Dame (Rick) and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Clyde; her parents; Clyde's parents, John and Eleanor Allen; her brother, Dennis Butterfield, her sister, Debra Lake, and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.
The family would like to thank Beacon Hospice, Theresa Dame, Dulcey Holbrook, Diane Currier, Noni Toothaker, Jackie Megquier, Rhonda LaPierre, and all others who provided wonderful in-home care over the years.
The public is invited to graveside services for both Anita and Clyde on May 31 at 3:00pm, located at Farmington Fairview Cemetery. Reverend Laura Church officiating. A social gathering will be held at Anita's home in New Sharon following the service.
