Fayette – Benjamin Charles Mitchell, age 94, passed away on May 9, 2025. Ben was born on February 8, 1931, at home in Livermore Falls, Maine, the son of Beulah Alder and Charles Ralph Mitchell. Ben lived in Livermore Falls until he went into the service in 1948. Ben was incredibly proud of his service with the Marines. He received an honorable discharge after being wounded in Korea. He received two Purple Hearts during his service; one was awarded for being shot and the other for freezing his feet. Ben worked at several jobs but ultimately retired from Maine Wood Turning at the age of 65.
On March 10, 1951, Ben married the love of his life, Phyllis Hunt. They were married for 68 years until her passing in 2019. They moved to Oxford when they were not able to continue living on their own. Ben was taken to the hospital due to issues with his small intestines, and when he was healed, he moved in with his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Nancy.
While living in Fayette with Paul and Nancy, he fell in love with their 2 cats, Rusty and Sadie. Rusty would lay on his bed and watch TV with Ben. Ben showed Rusty lions so he could learn how to roar!
After numerous illnesses, and many years of gentle care, Ben came to live at the VA in South Paris. We knew that being able to spend time with other people, and with plenty of friends and family to visit him, it would be a place that he would truly love. His great granddaughter, Makayla, worked there, and she would visit him most days. They had a very sweet relationship.
Ben is survived by two sons, Paul Mitchell and wife Nancy, and Michael Mitchell and wife Sandra; daughter, Edith Fletcher; 8 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his parents, Charles and Beulah; two sons, Peter and Kirk; and a daughter, Sally.
We want to give special thanks to the nurses, CNAs, housekeepers, kitchen staff, and family that were there to cater to his needs. He was well known and loved by so many there.
There will be a graveside service on Saturday June 28, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Moose Hill Cemetery in Livermore Falls. All are welcome to attend.
Arrangements are under the care of Dan & Scott's Cremation and Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington, Maine, where memories, photos, and condolences may be shared at dsfuneral.com.
