Obituary

Farmington - Carol H. Millay, 88, passed away with family by her side on October 30, 2026, in Farmington, ME.

Carol grew up in Fayette, Maine, on the family farm. As a young child she helped her dad with the chickens they raised – animals she detested until her passing. She also hunted, fished, drove the tractor, and spent time on the lake with him. Her first and lifelong love were horses. She sculpted, drew, and painted horses until she could own them. She attended Kents Hill where she was a tennis champion and downhill skier. She graduated from Maine Teachers College with a degree in elementary teaching and a minor in art. She went on to teach many different grade levels and art was at the center of her classes.

She married Graydon (Skip) Mann in 1960 and together they had three children – Leanne (Condon), Rebecca, and Eric Mann. They raised their family in Livermore Falls, attended the Livermore Falls Baptist Church, and had many Sunday dinners on Round Pond at the Mann family camp. In the 70’s they built a camp in Fayette on David Pond, which was part of the Hodgkins family land. The three kids spent long days swimming, fishing, exploring, and traipsing through the woods to visit Nana at their cabin. Life was idyllic on David Pond.

Skip and Carol divorced but worked to keep the family close. David Rawlins came into the family at that point, and Skip, David, and Carol were always connected. It was this love and support that guided the three kids through to adulthood.

The 70s were an amazing time in Maine. The camp was home to many people throughout this decade and beyond. Freedom, love, being true to oneself, finding purpose, and welcoming all beings were the “harmonizing sentiments of the day”; Carol readily encompassed it all, and she brought her children along for the ride. The friends who experienced all of this remained in her heart all her life. This period also led her to Buddhism, the Shambala tradition, meditation, yoga, and Tai Chi. These were the stabilizing influences for the remainder of her life. Later in life she made a solo trip to India and Tibet to visit monasteries, shrines, and temples.

Carol met Robert (Bob) Millay when she worked at Livermore Elementary School, and they were partners for over forty years until Bob’s passing in August 2026. They enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, long drives, dooryard visits, and they especially loved their Chesterville home. Together they raised many beautiful labrador retrievers.

Carol’s last job was with Women, Work, and Community. She worked with and supported women to find careers, their passion, attend college, and discover their voices. She loved this work and met many amazing women during these years.

Carol was predeceased by her parents, Wesley Sr. (1995), Genie Davenport Hodgkins (2006), her brother Wesley Jr (2020), her beloved Uncle Merle (2003), and life-time companion, Bob Millay (2026). She is survived by Skip and David Mann (Augusta/Sarasota FL), her three children Leanne Mann and husband Robert Condon (Wilton), Rebecca Mann and MJ Reith (Berwick), Eric and partner Susan (Brandon FL), nieces, grandnieces, and nephew – Heather Hodgkins, Molly and Audrey Patterson, (Fayette), Ryan Hodgkins (FL), and Rowen Labaugh (MA), and grandchildren and great grandchildren: Ian, Laura, Elizabeth, & Emmalyn Hagelin (Garland); Ryee & Reilly Fitzgerald, Maebella & Trap Spaulding (Kents Hill); Oliver and Riley Condon (Wilton); John, Kristin, Katie, Gray Hardingham (Berwick) Austin Mann (GA) and Sarah, Jacob, and Juilan Kaczmarek (Mt. Dora, FL). Carol leaves behind many beloved friends.

There will be a gathering to honor Carol at The Heritage, the family camp on Togus Pond, in July 2027.
