Strong - Craig Virgil Starbird passed away on December 31st, 2024. He was born to C. Virgil and Faye (Mimi) Stinchfield Starbird on October 30th, 1947. He was raised in Strong, Maine along with his beloved sister Nannette Starbird Reed.
Craig loved his life in Strong and spent his early years working alongside his father at Starbird Lumber Company. He graduated from Strong High School in 1966 and met his love, Pamela Soule Starbird. They married on June 22nd, 1968, and together they settled and raised 7 children in Strong. Soon after, he was drafted into the Air National Guard and was stationed out of the Maine ANG unit located in South Portland. After many years working for his father, he began working in Jay Maine for International Paper Company and later retired from Verso Paper.
Craig was a hard-working family man, who never really retired. When he was not "working", he could be found helping others; you could say that was his favorite hobby. Craig was a volunteer firefighter for the Strong Fire Department. When there was a fire, that was about the fastest you'd ever see him drive! He was also a member of the Strong American Legion Post 78. You would often find him at the Farmington Fair, or other local events, on the loudspeaker at the "Quarter Game" calling out the winning numbers as they raised money for local Veterans. Whether it was plowing; lending a hand on construction projects and making runs to Home Depot; driving dump trucks, fetching cars at the auction, or delivering oil for local small businesses; giving people rides; lending someone a vehicle; or he and his wife opening their home to those in need, he loved to be of service to others with joy in his heart and a good joke on hand!
He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and their friends by pulling them on the surfboard behind his boat in the summer out at Webb Lake, sledding on the hill next door and building the mountains of snow with his father for all the kids to play on in the winter, or riding mini-bikes up and down the railroad tracks when it wasn't mud season. Throughout the years, you could often spot him with at least one of his 17 grandchildren and his dog in tow taking the scenic route on his many adventures across the state to Owl's Head, Chinese Buffets, or visiting family and friends.
Craig is survived by his wife Pam; his sister, Nan Reed and her husband, Del; sister-in-law, Judy Barrington and her husband, John; his dearest friend and brother-in-law, Gregory Soule and his wife, Wanda; his beloved children; daughter, Karen Read; son, Christopher "Cap" Starbird and his wife, Melissa; son, Jeremy Starbird and his wife, Kristen; daughter, Amy Starbird and Chris Duvall; son, Crandon Starbird and his wife, Melissa; daughter, Amanda Porter and her wife, Kim; daughter, Megan Starbird, and honorary daughter, June Allen; his cherished 17 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; and many treasured nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Virgil and Faye Starbird, his uncle Harrison Starbird, his grandfather Wesley Stinchfield, his father and mother-in-law Willis and Ida Soule, and his son-in-law Christopher Read.
A celebration of life will be held at the Elks Lodge in Farmington on April 6th, 2025.
