Daniel Sherwood, 80, of Rangeley, Maine, passed away on October 5, 2023, at his home, surrounded by family. Dan was born on March 17th, 1943, to Elizabeth (Whitney) Sprague and Patrick H. Sherwood.
Dan is predeceased by his son, Joel Sherwood, of Owl's Head and stepsons, Cedric Savage of Chesterville, Roderick Savage of Auburn and Eric Savage of Rangeley.
He is survived by his wife Carole of Rangeley, siblings Stuart (Emmie) Sprague of Ducksbury, MA, Nathan (Lisa) Sprague of Portland and Michael (Maryann) Sherwood of North Carver, MA, daughter Rebecca (Phillip) Doughty of Topsham, stepson Kendrick (Karalee) Savage of Rangeley, and stepdaughter Olive (Colm) Bruce of Deer Isle along with 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Dan grew up in Augusta, moving to Portland during high school and graduated from Deering High. Dan's first career was as an iron worker, setting steel from Maine to New Jersey. He spent years as a general contractor, starting his own business, Sherwood and Son General Contracting. He built many homes in the greater Portland area. Dan's love of the outdoors drew him to the mountains of Rangeley where he retired as a mason. Having a knack for hand picking and placing dry stone, he created many beautiful fireplaces.
He enjoyed hunting. Depending on the season, he could be found hunting anything from birds to big game. Dan spent many summers boating and fishing on the waters of Casco Bay on his 40' Elco, Eight Bells II. The highlight of each spring was a trip to Miramichi in Canada for salmon fishing with friends.
The sun is over the yardarm.
At Dan's request, there will be no formal funeral services.
Arrangements are under the care of Dan and Scott's Cremation and Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington, Maine.
