Obituary

Edward D. (Pete) Smith, Jr. On December 4th, 2025, Pete Smith of Rangeley, Maine, left this Earth to join his lord and savior, Jesus Christ, in his next adventure, after courageously and gracefully fighting his battle with cancer. Edward (Pete) Smith Jr. was born on July 9th, 1955, to Beverly Mae (Cook) Smith and graduated from Boyertown, PA High School, class of 1973. In 1983, Pete joined his dad, Ed, in Rangeley where they both operated the Saddleback Motor Inn for several years. Pete went on to work for the Maine Department of Transportation where he formed many lasting friendships. After retiring from his position as Foreman for the Maine DOT, Pete took on the job of caretaker for a privately-owned set of camps at John Pond, Kennebago where, for 20 years, he found true peace and happiness, spending time working close to nature and doing what he enjoyed. He was a loyal member of the Kemankeag Lodge #0213 for over 30 years where he held several positions, including Master Mason. He also formed strong friendships with his Mason-affiliated motorcycle group, The Widow Sons. He leaves behind a dear brother, Mike Drewry, of New Hampshire; his beloved friend and brother, Jeff Smith and his wife Laurie of Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania; and several other brothers and sisters scattered across the country. Pete was a devoted father and will be missed by his two bonus sons, John Weisz of Portland, and Van Weisz of Brunswick (both formally of Rangeley) as well as Van's wife, Carmon Parker. He was loved by many friends, neighbors, and family members who grew close to him over the years, most especially, Dianne and Les Brown of Quincy, Massachusetts. He also leaves behind his long-time partner and dear friend, Carolyn Smith of Rangeley and their beloved dog, Murphy. His wise and gentle manner will be greatly missed by many. Pete requested no formal service; however, there will be a memorial motorcycle ride in the spring. If you would like to make a donation in Pete's memory, please consider the Building Fund for the Kemankeag Lodge, PO Box 889, Rangeley ME 04970.
