Freeman Township - Elizabeth (Betty) R. White Whittemore passed June 1, 2026, 15 years to the day of her mother's passing, both at Edgewood Rehabilitation and Living Center in Farmington.
She was born July 22, 1934, in Farmington, the eldest daughter of Arthur Llewellyn and Winona Kenney Robbins. Betty grew up on the family farm in New Vineyard, and the work ethic instilled at a young age continued to guide her throughout her life. As a youngster, Betty and her sister Beverly delivered milk around town using their father's work horses as transportation. As soon as she was old enough, she hired out to pick beans and corn and clean summer camps. As a teenager, she worked at local stores in New Vineyard, for Percy and Matha Webber at their wood turning mill, at the Exchange Hotel in Farmington, and as an operator for Farmer's Telephone Office in Farmington. All of this was done while receiving her education at Roosevelt Grammar School and Farmington High School, graduating in 1952.
Betty was employed for 16 years by the Forster Manufacturing Co. in various departments and locations. She served as the fiscal officer for Franklin County Community Action Council for 20 years. Her last job was serving the town of Strong as tax collector/treasurer for six years. In addition to her day jobs, she also worked for the Strong Water District. Of them, she most enjoyed her years with the crew and "the best boss I ever had, Herb Neil" at Forster's Timber Unit. She was also active in several Grange chapters, Merrill Rebekah Lodge of Farmington, and Oppalunshi Order of O.E.S.
In 1958, Betty moved her young family to Grange Street in Strong, where she resided for 51 years. She married Wendell White of Avon on Jan. 3, 1959. He passed away Jan. 15, 1985. She married Fred Whittemore of Dixfield on Oct. 12, 1996. He passed away Dec. 21, 2011.
In 2009, Betty moved to Freeman to be nearer to her daughter's family and enjoyed the daily activities of the family farm, always looking for more to do to help. She was always up for an adventurous road trip with granddaughters Jodi and Jami, and in more recent years, she lent a hand by caring for and playing with her great-granddaughter Madelyn.
Betty is survived by son, Robert Grover; daughter, Winona (Noni) Badershall; daughter-in-law, Brenda Grover; granddaughters, Jodi Badershall, Jami Badershall (Jordan Wing), Sara McDougall (Billy), Ashley Grover (Andy Demaris); six great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons. She is also survived by three sisters, Beverly Abbott, Arlene Webber (Gerald), and Joanne Moody (Wesley); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by her parents; husbands, Wendell and Fred; son-in-law, Llewellyn Badershall; sister-in-law and cherished friend, Celia White; and brother-in-law, Jesse White; and brothers-in-law, Lucius Webber and Lauris (Audy) Abbott.
At Betty's request, there will be no public services.
