Madison - With immense sadness, we share the passing of our beloved mother, Ernestine Mary (Dyer) Shemwell. Ernestine gained her wings on the 20th of December 2025. She passed peacefully at the Hospice House in Auburn, ME. As the angels guided Ernestine home, she was surrounded by love and endearment. Ernestine was born on the 14th of November 1949. Ernestine was born in Farmington, Maine. She is predeceased by her father, Ernest James Dyer and her mother, Dorothea Avas (Bachelder) Tyler; grandparents, uncles, aunts, grandson, cousins and dear friends, are rejoicing with Ernestine, as they welcome her home.
As Ernestine is reuniting with loved ones above, she is survived by her daughters, Lesia Shemwell, Shannon Elkins, and Leah Christen. Lesia is the first gift of motherhood Ernestine was blessed with. Lesia blessed Ernestine with 3 grandchildren, Robert, Alexander, and Chasity. Shannon was the second blessing of motherhood. Shannon also blessed Ernestine with 3 grandchildren, Bradley, Brody, and Briley. Leah is the youngest one to broaden Ernestine's motherhood blessing. Leah blessed Ernestine with the youngest grandchild, Emmalyne. Ernestine's family tree continues to grow filling in with great grandchildren. Extended survivors are her born sister, Jane Dyer; chosen sister, Morgan Silver; 3 beloved son-in-laws; cousins; and lifelong friends.
As her journey continues in the heavens- her life stories will become legends among us all. Ernestine will be carried with us in our thoughts, hearts, memories, and blessings. She enjoyed celebrating her Native American heritage at Pow Wows and in her personal beliefs. She was baptized and a true believer as a lifelong Catholic. Ernestine was an adventurous soul. Her kindred spirit would help anyone she could. Ernestine was known for her passion for wolves and other wildlife. She was a good hunter and always knew where to catch the best trout. Ernestine was always at peace in the woods amongst nothing but pure nature. Some of her favorite life experiences are as follows. She loved being known as Mom, Grammie, GG, and Mimi. Ernestine's most cherished time was spent with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She had a special relationship with each one. Ernestine was the matriarch of her family. Ernestine always offered a listening ear, advice if asked, a comforting shoulder, or just a safe place. Ernestine's native name is "Whispering Winds". As her spirit dances on the winds, it carries a gentle whisper of her love.
Through Ernestine's life some of her passions continued to grow. She was involved with The Lions Club and The Pithians Sisters. She took pride in her martial arts accomplishments and being an active advocate for others. Ernestine achieved her master's with a 4.0 GPA. She always enjoyed learning new things. She had a favorite hobby for each season. Her love for fishing, hunting, moose riding, crocheting/knitting, or picking blueberries was passed down with her heirs. No matter the adventure she always had a story to share. The world lost a rare special heart when the heavens called Ernestine home. Ernestine's past work included being a bartender, waitress, sales associate, customer service, raising wolf hybrids, corrections officer, probation counselor, and a BSS (Behavioral Services Specialist).
Ernestine will be remembered for her big heart, wild ways, passion for nature, and her deep love for her family and friends. Ernestine was an inspirational person and always having a word of encouragement. Lifetimes of wisdom is an understatement. Ernestine will be remembered for her strength and for her unconditional love. Ernestine will be missed by all who were blessed to know her. This is only a glimpse into our mother's life.
