Harland married the love of his life, Joan Varney (Goucher) in December 1955. They raised two sons together during their 60 years of marriage.

Harland enjoyed spending his time working in his shop, tending over his cucumbers or puttering around on his John Deere tractor. Though he often came across as serious and solemn those who knew him well enjoyed his subtle sense of humor. Harland lived a good life, full of love, loving his family above all else.
