Farmington-Harley Vinton Sargent passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2025, at the age of 90. Harley was born on the family farm in East Madrid on April 21, 1935, the son of Irwin and Amber Sargent. Harley worked with his father in the woods in his early years. Moving from East Madrid to Greenville, he worked on the first forest fire lookout tower in the United States doing fire watch duty on what was then called "Big Squaw Mountain," now known as "Big Moose Mountain." On his days off, with paycheck in hand, he hiked down the mountain to town for $12.50 worth of food, and the rest of his check supported flying lessons with a flight instructor in Greenville. He learned to fly on floats before land and successfully became a certified pilot. After meeting that goal, Harley spread his wings and joined the U.S. Army taking him to California. During his time in California, he met and married Joan Trudeau Sargent.
Moving back to Maine, Harley followed his passion of flying and in 1974 Harley and several of his pilot friends started what is now known as the Sandy River Flying Club at Lindbergh Field in Avon. Harley shared his love of flying with anyone who wanted to learn including his kids. Taking time to teach each person who asked him to help prepare them for their private pilot certification. Over the years, he owned a long list of airplanes. His most favorite being his Aronica Champ. He made many lifelong friends along his aviation journey.
Harley worked at Franklin Memorial Hospital in the Maintenance Department, retiring after many years of service. In retirement, Harley and Joan regularly traveled to Florida and Tennessee in the winter months and followed annual fly-Ins including the Sandy River Flying Club Fly-In, Norridgewock Fly-In and the Greenville Fly-In.
Harley is survived by three sons and their spouses: Mike Sargent (Teresa), Glen Sargent (Kristen), Doug Sargent (Delena); grandchildren: Casey Abbott, Kristi Sargent, Breanna Sargent Cochran, Britney Sargent, Brecken Sargent, Brinlyn Sargent, Daelyn Sargent, Rielyn Sargent, Bricelyn Sargent, Ashlyn Sargent and seven great grandchildren. Brother Rodney Sargent (Cindy) and their son Nathan.
Harley is predeceased by his wife of 66 years Joan Sargent, daughter Debra Sargent Waddle and parents Irwin and Amber Sargent.
A Celebration of Life will be held in the Spring.
The Sargent family would like to thank the staff at Maplecrest Rehabilitation and Living Center in Madison and Beacon Hospice for the care they provided Harley.
