Obituary

New Portland - Helen Atwood went to be with Our Lord, on June 13, 2025, at her home, at the age of 96. Born Helen Edwards in Barre, Vermont, May 3, 1929, her family moved to Leominster, Massachusetts where she attended school. Her family then moved to New Portland, Maine, where she married Colby Atwood in 1949. Helen was involved in many organizations and clubs. The 4H Club with her young sons, the New Portland Grange, the New Portland Cooperative Extension, Stitching Club, the New Portland Churches and volunteered at both the Central Elementary School Library and the New Portland Library. Helen was a caregiver for multiple family members throughout her years. She was employed at the New Portland Town Office for a few years and then worked at Dirigo Dowel Mill in West New Portland, until her retirement at the age of 65. She then began being a caregiver for other elderly people in the community for several years. Helen was predeceased by her mother and father, Charles and Fannie Edwards; husband, Colby; siblings, James Edwards, Joyce (Edwards) Raimondo, Robert Edwards; and Grandson, Alex Atwood. She leaves behind her sons; Richard and wife Bonnie, Kenneth and wife Wardy, David and wife Cindy; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Champeon; grandchildren, Michelle, Jessi, Nicole and Colby; great grandchildren, Ezra, Emma, Nathaniel and R.J.; a great-great grandson, Ayden; and loving nieces, Angela Raimondo and Donna Kelley. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 19th, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the East New Portland Cemetery.
