Concord Township - John T. Parker, 80, passed away peacefully on July 28 after a life defined by steadfast love, quiet strength, and an unwavering commitment to his family, his work, and the Maine outdoors.

John found his greatest peace in nature. He spent countless hours in the woods caring for the land, cutting firewood, and appreciating the simple beauty around him. He climbed many of Maine's mountains, including Mount Katahdin, paddled the Allagash, and spent long summer days swimming in Wyman Lake and the Atlantic Ocean off Hermit Island. Though he loved the mountains, lakes, and forests of Maine, John's true home was wherever his family was.

That same quiet determination shaped his career. John dedicated more than 30 years to the telephone company, climbing poles and restoring phone lines in every kind of weather. Those who knew him often joked that it wasn't unusual to see him high atop a telephone pole in the middle of a Maine winter wearing nothing more than a T-shirt.

Nothing, however, brought John greater joy than the people he loved. He shared 58 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Gail. Together they built a life centered on love, generosity, and unwavering devotion to one another. Their marriage was a quiet example of enduring partnership, and their home was a place where everyone was welcomed.

John was a devoted father to his daughters, Tanya and Shayna, and was deeply grateful for the close relationships he shared with his sons-in-law, Erik and Dempy. Whether tackling a house project together or enjoying long conversations, they built friendships rooted in mutual respect, trust, and genuine affection. He was also a proud grandfather to Annika, Luke, Hazel, and Ezri. He never measured success by what he had, but by how well he cared for the people he loved. He worked tirelessly to ensure his family had not only what they needed, but every opportunity to pursue their dreams.

Some of the happiest memories of those who loved John were made in the simple moments he created. He delighted in entertaining the children in his life—his daughters and their childhood friends, his nieces and nephews, and later his beloved grandchildren. Whether pulling long trains of Super Tubers through the ocean, giving bean bag rides, building epic sledding hills after a fresh snowfall, or gathering everyone around a crackling campfire for s'mores, John had a gift for creating magical childhoods. To his grandchildren, he wasn't just “Gampa”—he was the one who got down on the floor to play, carried them on his shoulders, shot baskets until the sun went down, dealt one more hand of Uno, and never missed an opportunity to make them laugh.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Gail; his daughters, Tanya and Shayna; his sons-in-law, Erik and Dempy; his cherished grandchildren, Annika, Luke, Hazel, and Ezri; his siblings and their spouses, Beth and Val Landry, Michael and Terri Parker, Paul and Daisy Parker, and Judy Parker; along with extended family and dear friends.

He is pre-deceased by his brother, Richard Parker.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the many caregivers, family members and friends who walked alongside John throughout his journey. Your compassion, kindness, prayers, and steadfast support brought comfort, strength, and dignity not only to John, but to all who loved him. We will be forever grateful.

With his own hands, John built the home where his family grew together. His greatest achievement, however, was not the house itself, but the life he and Gail created within its walls—a family grounded in love, generosity, resilience, and unwavering support. Those foundations will continue to shelter generations to come.

The forests of Fletcher Mountain, the waters of Wyman Lake and the Allagash, the summit of Katahdin, and the shoreline of Hermit Island will always bear John's footprints, but his truest legacy lives in the family he loved so completely and in the countless lives made better simply because he was part of them. His family will forever imagine him where he was happiest—with a hatchet in the woods, a canoe on the water, high on a mountain trail, or beside a crackling campfire surrounded by the people he loved most.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Phillips Area Community Center, 21 Depot Street in Phillips on September 13, 2026, at 2pm.
