Obituary

Farmington – Linwood (Bussie) Herbert York, age 86, a life-long resident of Farmington, Maine, died with family by his side on July 9, 2024. Bussie was born April 19, 1938, in Farmington, Maine, to Linwood J York and Lila (Mosher) York. Bussie is survived by his loving daughters, Terry (John) Zacker, Tammy (Pete) Kelley, and Trudy (Erik) Johnson; his grandchildren, Camden, Kendall, and Brady Zacker; Billy and Cody (Emily) Kelley; Erika and Mariah Johnson; and his three great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Teagan and Brinley Kelley. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Brenda; his parents, Linwood and Lila York and his cherished grandson, Alek Johnson. Bussie graduated from Farmington High School in 1956 and the University of Maine at Orono in 1958. He was raised on the family farm on Mosher Hill before his parents purchased the Sandy River Farm which he and Brenda started farming on their own in 1958. Shoulder to shoulder, they raised dairy and beef cattle and cultivated over 600 acres of farmland. Bussie liked nothing better than planting and harvesting his crops. He took special joy in growing sweet corn which he and Brenda sold at a roadside stand in Farmington. Bussie was active in numerous associations and boards. He served on the Board of Directors for the National Soil and Water Conservation Association for many years traveling the country to promote sound conservation [practices. He was also on the board for the state and the local National Soil and Water Conservation District associations; was a long-time board member of the Farmington Farmers Union; served on the Planning Board for the town of Farmington and was active in Farm Bureau and 4-H beef and steer clubs. Bussie and Brenda loved traveling and participated in several international agricultural trips as well as many trips across the US to visit friends and family or to attend conferences and meetings. They were both recognized with several awards for farm and conservation stewardship including the Maine Conservation Farm of the Year in 1965 and 1994. In 2008, the town of Farmington dedicated the annual report to them. He won an award at the NACD conference in Las Vegas, an award through NCGA, as well as graduating high school with a Superior Scientific Scholarship Award. A Funeral Service will be held on July 16, 2024, at 11:00 am at Dan and Scott's Cremation and Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington, ME. Refreshments will follow and a graveside burial celebrating Busssie's life will start at 1:00 pm at Fairview Cemetery in Farmington. For information please call (207)779-9008.
