Mark Gregory Hutton ,72, of Vienna Maine, son of James Harkness Hutton & Peggy Sandifer Hutton, passed on January 27, 2026, quietly at home. Mark graduated from Simsbury High School and attended the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) for a time. In 1973 he purchased Tariffville Shoe Repair and was trained by the retiring owner, Beni Locknichki. Mark married Hillary Holcomb and they moved to Boston where he was employed at Felix Shoe Repair in Harvard Square.
In the early 80's, Mark & Hillary moved to Friendship Maine where Mark became interested in pottery and began his lifelong exploration of the medium. His early pieces were thrown on kick wheel and electric fired. He focused on functional ware and never wavered from that focus, even when he moved on to gas firing the elusive copper red glaze that he became known for. He was an aficionado of all things handmade and never considered himself an artist but always an artisan. He and Hillary were known as Hutton Studios, they worked from home and attended craft fairs throughout New England selling their pottery and weavings.
Mark had been a Board member of the Maine Craft Guild which later became part of the Maine Crafts Association as the guild level membership. He was also a member of the League of NH Craftsmen for many years exhibiting in their flagship show on Mount Sunapee every August.
Many dear friends will miss his sly wit and good humor. He had a beautiful life and lived it well.
Mark leaves behind his wife, Hillary of 52 years and his little dog Pippin. He will be sadly missed by his brothers, James David Hutton and his wife Susan of Albuquerque, NM, John Hutton and his wife Pia, of Canton, CT; four nephews and a niece, Margaret Hutton, Tom Hutton, Ian Hutton, Sean Hutton; and four grand nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Earl Hutton.
Arrangements are under the care of Dan & Scott's Cremation and Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington, Maine, where memories, photos and condolences may be shared at dsfuneral.com
