Obituary

Nancy Marie (Cahill) Baxter of Falmouth, Maine, passed away on August 30, 2025. She was born in Newton, Massachusetts, on October 21, 1943. In her final days, Mom was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and the caring staff at Prince Point, and left this world peacefully. Mom leaves behind her four children: Kristin (Tim) Baxter, Morgan (Kathy) Baxter, Shauna (Jim) Dunn, and Michael (Dana) Baxter; her siblings, Jane Cahill Hunt and Paul Cahill; her grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. She was predeceased by her husband—our dad—Billy, with whom she shared 40 years of marriage. Mom was born and raised in Wellesley, Massachusetts, and earned an associate's degree from the Chandler School for Women. After marrying Dad, they lived in Millis, Massachusetts, until a family camping trip inspired a big change. In 1981, they moved to Farmington, Maine, bought an old farm with 20 acres, and alongside their day jobs, they embraced small-scale farming as a way of life. Mom never fussed about herself and always had something to do. From feeding the animals to helping with the maple syruping—and even the less glamorous work of preparing the turkeys to sell for Thanksgiving meals - Mom did it all with quiet grace. She made the best dilly beans and spent countless summer evenings on the porch shelling peas. Long before "organic living" became a trend, Mom had already mastered it. Our Mom was a devoted mother, and she loved caring for her family, her home and her yard. Whether baking from scratch, hanging laundry on the line, knitting sweaters, tending flowers, preserving vegetables from the garden, or stacking the wood in the woodshed, Mom poured her heart into her everyday life. She especially loved being outdoors and continued to mow the lawn well into her later years on her ride-on mower. She also treasured trips to the ocean and special times with her siblings on their memorable getaways. Mom smiled easily, had a contagious laugh, and will be deeply missed. The family is grateful to Beacon Hospice. If so inclined, donations may be made in her memory to: Beacon Hospice 52 Atlantic Place, Suite B-50 South Portland, Maine 04106
