New Vineyard - Neil Silkman, 69, born and raised in Danbury, CT passed away on January 2, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and countless cherished memories. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Margaret, and their four daughters, Carrie, Erin, Megan, and Bonnie, who were the lights of his life; his three sons-in-law, Ron, Sean and Jesse; his sister Holly; brother Glenn; and his loving mother, Clara. Neil's devotion to his family extended to his nieces, nephews and six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sadie, Addison, Grace, Sofie and Rocky, who adored their playful and ever-enthusiastic grandfather. Grandpa was their #1 fan, a jubilant supporter cheering them on at hockey, soccer, and basketball games as well as dance recitals.
Neil was a man of strong faith and connection to Immanuel Lutheran Church & School in Danbury, where he met Margaret, an Elementary school teacher, while he was coaching the school basketball team. In 1982, they moved to Maine to raise their growing family and enjoy the beautiful outdoors and life's simple pleasures. Neil's passion for adventure and love for nature knew no bounds, as did his enthusiasm for any activity that brought people together. Whether it was a camping trip, a scenic bike ride, a hike, a ski run or snowshoe, a canoe ride, or a walk in the woods, the great outdoors was his playground.
A skilled woodworker and craftsman, Neil had a talent for creating beautiful, detailed pieces that reflected his patience and artistry. A millwright by trade, Neil worked in paper and wood mills throughout his life. He always enjoyed fixing things and engineering creative solutions. He was equally known for his fierce, fun competitive spirit when it came to board games and his love of pickleball, where his energy and determination always shone. Neil also shared his love of sports as a passionate coach for girls' basketball, inspiring and teaching his daughters and their teammates for many years.
Neil's home was his haven, filled with love, laughter, and the comforting presence of his family and pets. He loved tending to their vegetable garden and planting flowers, enjoying summer days by the pool, and swinging on their tree swings. His contagious smile and positivity brought light to every room he entered, and his energy uplifted everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Above all, Neil was most proud of the family he and Margaret built together. He cherished every moment spent with them, celebrating life's milestones and everyday joys. Neil Silkman was a man who truly lived life to the fullest, spreading joy, love, and kindness wherever he went. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of life and pickleball tournament will be held Sunday, April 6 to honor the incredible man he was. The first annual "Neil Silkman Memorial Pickleball Classic" will be held at the Farmington Community Center, where friends and family can gather to share stories, love, and laughter, while playing pickleball. The family asks that you spend time outdoors, play a game with your loved ones, or simply share a smile in his memory—just as Neil would have wanted. "Keep Smiling"
