A long-time resident of Carrabassett Valley, Member of the Unit 8 and a Legend of the Ski Patrol Family, Philip Howe passed away peacefully on April 3, 2024.
Phil was born on November 25, 1943. He graduated from South Portland High Schol, attended the University of Maine Gorham campus and the University of New York, after which, Phil traveled out west to ski. He also became a bartender to pay for his skiing.
Phil was on the Sugarloaf Ski Patrol for 25 years and a volunteer patroller at Shawnee Peak for 10 years. He was a trainer and examiner for the National Ski Patrol Association and Professional Ski Patrol Association. Phil had a lifetime membership for his continued service to PSPA. The patrollers had many road trips in which Phil was the designated driver. He started the original Beach Parties.
In the off season, Phil was a self-employed painter. He painted many houses in the Valley, as well as on the mountain. Phil always had a dog by his side, whether it was boating, painting or just hanging out.
Phil is predeceased by his father, Woodbury F. Howe and his mother, Corrine Howe. Phil is survived by his brother David Howe, by close friends Linda Allen and Jeff Cole, of Carrabassett Valley, along with his extended Ski Patrol family – especially Unit 8. He will be deeply missed!
