Farmington - Robert "Bob" Shufelt passed away peacefully on February 3, 2026, with his son by his side at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. Born in Greenville on November 17, 1941, Bob was a North Woods man through and through. He spent most of his life right there in Greenville, where the lakes, rivers, and ridges shaped him into the outdoorsman everyone knew and loved. In his later years, he moved to Woodlands Senior Living in Farmington to be closer to his son, Rob, and—true to form—he made fast friends with just about everyone.
Bob was a legendary Maine fly tier, known far beyond Moosehead country. His Shufelt Special wasn't just another pattern—it was his, and anyone who ever fished it knew it. It earned its place in Favorite Flies of Maine – 50 Essential Patterns from Local Experts, though Bob would chuckle and set the record straight if anyone tried to call it a Mickey Finn with marabou. Plenty of folks copied it, but only Bob tied it with that Shufelt touch. Around Greenville, people used to say that Bob and his son could pull a salmon out of a mud puddle—and no one doubted it.
He was a storyteller in the old Maine way, spinning yarns on the banks of whatever water he happened to be fishing. Some of his fondest memories were at his grandfather's camp at Island Falls with his brother Bill, bailing boats at daybreak before they were allowed to wet a line. Later in life, he spent countless hours on Big Indian Pond with his best friends, Scott and Barbara Richardson. Barb's baked beans and bread were as much a part of the day as the fishing, and if luck was with them, a fat trout rounded things out.
Winters meant ice fishing—lake trout with his son Rob, cousin Ernest Servant, and friend Joe Obrin. Those days on the ice were as important to Bob as any summer morning on open water. Rob and Tammy also treasured their cribbage games with Bob and his wife, Shirley. Whoever won got bragging rights and a "happy dance" around the kitchen, which Bob performed with great enthusiasm.
Bob is predeceased by his beloved wife, Shirley; his sister, Sharon; and his parents, Madeline and George.
He is survived by his son, Rob and wife Tammy; his daughter, Sharon and her partner Burnham Jones; grandchildren, Courtney Gilbert, Kelsey Pelkey, and Alyssa Hardacker; his brother, Bill Shufelt; brother-in-law, Leonard Grant and partner Lois Morin; and six great grandchildren who he adored. He leaves behind many dear friends—too many to count, but none forgotten.
Arrangements are under the care of Dan and Scott's Cremation and Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington, Maine., where memories, condolences, and photos may be shared at dsfuneral.com.
A joint graveside service for Bob and Shirley will be held in June at Greenville Cemetery, with a memorial gathering to follow at Bartley's Center Cove Events.
