Obituary

Farmington – Sarah Faye Makinen, 81, of Farmington, passed away peacefully, on December 4, surrounded by her loving family. Sarah was born on September 7, 1944, in Livermore, the daughter of Irvin and Ruth (Howard) Timberlake. She attended local schools and, later in life, proudly returned to night school to earn her diploma. She was a strong speller and often shared that even her teacher would turn to her for help. Sarah grew up on Turkey Lane, where she made many cherished memories with her five siblings, often reminiscing about long summer days spent haying in the fields and swimming in Breton's Pond. On May 4, 1961, she married the love of her life, Larry Makinen. Together, they owned and operated F.L. Butler Oil Company in Farmington, serving their community for many years. Earlier in life, Sarah also worked in Oscar Turner's hen houses, where she and Larry first met. Sarah was the beloved matriarch of her family, steady, nurturing, and always bringing everyone together. Her Sunday meals were the highlight of the week, gathering the family around pot roast, homemade pizza, warm yeast rolls made from scratch, and the all-time favorite: her unforgettable spaghetti sauce. Throughout the years, she enjoyed camping in Eustis, where many games of Uno were played, crocheting gifts for the family, snowmobiling, taking walks around the neighborhood, enjoying a good cup of coffee with friends, bowling with the Meadow Lanes Bowling League, trying new recipes, and, most of all, spending time with her family. She is survived by her daughters, Lois Bubier of Farmington and Suzanne Makinen of New Sharon; her son, Barry Makinen, and his wife, Holly, of West Farmington; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, including Amanda and her husband James Beane and their son Gantley; Mathew Makinen; Michael and his brother Keith Webber; Kayla and Anthony Balsam and their children Eve and Darrel; Hayley Inman and her daughter, due in March; Breanna Inman; Heavenly Vernesoni; Dustin and his wife Teighlor Makinen and their daughters Kya and Nora; and Dillion Makinen and Telinah O'Neil and their son Xander. She is also survived by her brother, Charlie Timberlake, and his wife, Cheryl, of Mt. Vernon; and her sister-in-law, Priscilla Smith of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia; and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Larry Makinen; her parents, Irvin and Ruth Timberlake; her brothers, Melvin and Carroll Timberlake; her sisters, Greta Timberlake and Linda Wilson and her husband, Ben; and her son-in-law, Jon Bubier. Our family takes comfort in knowing she is reunited with loved ones and resting peacefully in God's care. Graveside services will be held in the spring at the Fairview Cemetery, in Farmington. Arrangements are under the care of Dan and Scott's Cremation and Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Road, Farmington, Maine, where memories, photos and condolences may be shared at dsfuneral.com.
