Farmington - Our attentive, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend, Sharon Lee Barker, 71, did it her way and saw in the New Year at her home with her affectionate family by her side. She battled dementia for years which robbed her of a meaningful full life.
Sharon was born September 10, 1953. Growing up she was immersed in the family business, Hidden Acres Dairy and Dairy Bar. Upon graduation from Mt. Blue High School, she married her sweetheart, George Leigh Barker, and for 53 years they were inseparable to the very end.
She did not let her childhood define her. Her work ethic was impeccable. She enjoyed her employment throughout her working years at Edgewood Manor, LEAP, and Pine Tree Women's Care. Also with Attorney's Jonathan Luce, Frank Underkuffler and Margot Joly. Her last employment where she retired was at the University of Maine at Farmington in Manter Library.
Sharon and George worked hand in hand in remodeling their home, they built a farmers porch, added two rooms to their place and built Sharon a "she" shed. They enjoyed gardening and landscaping. A true birdwatcher, she and George built all their houses and feeders. Together they worked at their camp in Temple " Heaven's Gate", which Sharon named. While spending ten years at Deer Farm Campgrounds, Sharon was the guiding light to many camper gatherings. She rode "shotgun" for many years and hours of plowing and sanding.
Sharon found time and engaged in many community activities: The West Farmington Village Improvement Society, Farmington Historical Society, The Farmington Fireman's Auxiliary, American Red Cross, Edgewood Manor, American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, and the Touch of Class. She enjoyed her friends at the Elks Lodge and volunteered for 21 years to help with The Donn Barker Memorial Horseshoe Tournament.
She was an extraordinary painter and gave her exquisite works to family and friends. She was a dedicated gardener and canned and preserved her delectable fruits and vegetables. She adored all of her pets and would bring wayward animals home to care for them.
Sharon lived for her family and loved them with her whole heart. She was the kindest, most caring person who gave the best hugs. She was also a spitfire and could light up every room with her smile and contagious laughter. She radiated love and you felt it in any room she was present. Her legacy of love, commitment, wisdom, guidance, and empathy will be forever in our hearts
