Obituary

Farmington - Wallace "Skip" Dyke, 90, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2024, at Orchard Park Nursing Home. He was born on October 9, 1934, in Wilton, ME, the son of Stella (Davenport) and Guy Dyke. Skip married Mary Carew Dyke of Hudson, MA on October 22, 1960, in Concord, MA. They had one daughter and two sons and were married until Mary's untimely death from cancer in 1985. As a family, they would spend summers at Dummer's Beach in Weld, travel and camp around New England (often where Skip worked), and cherish camping during April vacations on Cape Cod. He also enjoyed skiing during the winter with his children at Titcomb Hill while Mary watched from the lodge. After Mary's death, Skip was fortunate enough to find love again. He married Erlane Williams Dyke on January 1, 1987, after she too lost her first husband to cancer. They lived very happily together for over thirty years until her death in March of 2017. Skip dedicated much of his life to his work as an equipment operator, beginning with H.E. Sargent and later for E.L. Vining. He also plowed snow for the Town of Farmington during winter layoffs. He took immense pride in operating bulldozers and graders, skillfully building and repairing roads across Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. No matter where his travels took him, he would always have a story about having built that road, cleared that shopping center, or having graded that airport. In his later years, Skip loved to travel and explore the world with Erlane. He cherished time spent with his brothers, sisters, family, and friends. Bowling in the seniors' league at Meadow Lanes was one of his favorite pastimes. Skip also gave back to his community, volunteering at Franklin Memorial Hospital and greeting parishioners at the door each Sunday at church. He was a devout member of both St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Farmington Baptist Church. Skip resided at Orchard Park Assisted Living for the past few years, where he became known for his humor and joy. His love of laughter and his philosophy of "eight hugs a day" were, in his words, his secret to a long life. He is survived by his sons, Bill Davenport of Wiscasset and Kelley Dyke of Wilton; his daughter, Lisa Sutherland of Jacksonville Beach, FL.; his stepsons, Rick and Robert Williams; and twelve grandchildren. A small private graveside service will be held in the spring. Arrangements are under the care of Dan and Scott's Cremation and Funeral Service, 488 Farmington Falls Rd., Farmington, Maine, where memories, photos and condolences may be shared at dsfuneral.com.
